In this article, we interviewed students about what they are doing at university and why they entered the IGS.The 2018 students answered this interview. They told us their dreams and what they want to do in the courage.

Max ~The Sporty Traveller~

I came to Japan to play baseball, specifically Koshien. I was inspired through media of how dramatic and exciting Koshien in Japan was, so I came here to experience it as well. It was a tough journey for me, learning new culture and language, but it helped me grow as a person. Right now, I am here enjoying IGS. For the field I plan to take on second year, I already chose the field of Culture and Tourism even before entering IGS. One reason is that Hiroshima itself is a big famous tourist spot, having a lot of meaning places such as Miyajima and Peace Park. Another reason is that I simply love travelling and would like to explore more in Japan. For me, IGS is very liberated and Japanese students are quite open minded to international students.

Ryan ~The Scientist Gamer~

Scholarship opportunity brought me to Japan, years later now I’m here in Hiroshima. The reason I’m taking Environment and Society, to make the story short, is that I love science and animals. When I was a kid, I usually play in a fully natural environment. With that I am really interested in “revitalization”. I look forward in studying about how we can restore our destroyed environment. I find IGS very interesting because each student has his or her own uniqueness. I always thought that college might be boring because everyone would only focus on studying, but here in IGS, it’s the complete opposite. I really feel that we are a family here. Currently, I am enjoying studying in IGS while I also often do my hobby, which is gaming.

Kenshin ~The Most Peaceful Guy on IGS~

I found out the department of IGS from my teacher, and it immediately got my attention because the classes are taught in English and I can study with many international students. When I was in high school freshman, I studied in New Jersey for one year and it was a challenging experience for me. I plan to take the Peace & Communication field because as a student who was born in Hiroshima, I feel that I have a responsibility to focus on and spreading peace. I also have a citizenship in America, giving me an interest in English as a Lingua Franca as well. Right now, I am leading “English Bible Study” together with my friends wherein we have Bible Study, sing songs and discuss opinions. It is open for all, regardless of nationality, religion or culture!

Yui ~The Agricultural Economist~

I decided to go to IGS because it is a quite unique department. I cannot find any other departments that I can learn natural sciences and global studies at the same time in English in Japan. After I moved to Hiroshima from my hometown, Goto island in Nagasaki, I rediscovered the charm of my hometown, and came to think that I want to contribute to the development of my hometown by the agriculture that is familiar to me. Also, I originally have had interest in economy, so that leads me into finding the field of agricultural economics. Now, I am studying economics by myself through reading books, and I am planning to study agriculture in Australia next year. Besides, I often listen to English songs and watch foreign films to improve my English while enjoying it.

Solya ~The Peace Musician~

After I graduated from a Japanese high school, I was originally planning to study abroad in Belgium, but in the last moment I decided to come back to Japan. Hiroshima is one of my most favorite places, because of its rich history, breathtaking nature and most importantly, kind and loving people. I came to IGS because I wanted to study international relations and languages. Now, I am focusing on gathering knowledge from all different fields, and my main goal is to find how music, arts, and culture contribute to international relations. I believe these are very important parts of peacebuilding and diplomatic relations. What I like about studying here is that, IGS is a place where it allows its students to be as creative as they want to be and all there’s left for us to do is to just go for whatever goals and dreams we have.

Suzu ~The Bright Tourist~

I entered IGS because I want to contribute to the least developed countries and save people who are financially struggling, but I was not sure how I could be of help to those people before I came here. After I entered IGS, I found hope through tourism and dark tourism, which was a topic that I found interesting in a class, and I thought it could be one of the ways to solve the issues in developing and least developed countries. So, I want to study about tourism and research about how we can improve the situation in least developed countries through tourism here in IGS. And then, after I graduate from IGS, I do not know what exactly it will be, but I want to have a job, which can be mediation between the biggest organizations, such as the governments or UN and local organizations, such as NGO, so that voices of smaller organizations can reach to the top institutions.
